3. Exciting New Australian Government initiative to support GP College Registrars and Fellows with access to AST training opportunities!

The Advanced Skills Training Posts Rural Generalist and General Practitioner Program (AST Program) is an Australian Government initiative administered by ACRRM. This exciting new program will provide support to ACRRM and RACGP registrars and Fellows in regional, rural and remote Australia to attain advanced skills.

The program will give access to innovative new Advanced Skills Training (AST)posts and utilise funding to support and attract doctors to these positions. Two full time AST posts will be funded annually in each State, with the Northern Territory awarded three posts annually, in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The intent of this program is to identify innovative training opportunities that develop the skills required by our rural communities and provide participants with a positive high quality training experience.

Not only are all AST disciplines supported under the GP Colleges’ curriculum (procedural and non-procedural), but AST posts may be in hospital, general practice community and non-general practice community training settings. This makes the AST program a unique opportunity to ensure rural communities have access to RGs and GPs with the right skills, in the right place.

If you have a registrar who may be interested in accessing one of these positions or you can identify the need for an AST post in your region please contact the ACRRM or RACGP representative in your state or email
