In the lead up to NAIDOC Week 2025, General Practice Supervision Australia (GPSA) and the Joint Colleges Training Services (JCTS) signed an historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cement their shared commitment to advancing cultural safety as a central pillar of general practice (GP) training.

This landmark agreement formalises a unique collaboration between the national peak body for GP supervision and the organisation charged with equipping all GPs with the skills to deliver culturally safe healthcare, particularly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

The MoU sets out joint efforts to enhance cultural safety education, co-develop innovative resources, and foster opportunities for collaborative research, sector representation, and policy development. It acknowledges the vital role of GP supervisors, practice teams, and training sites in delivering best-practice education that respects and incorporates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.

Both organisations have affirmed their commitment to not only honour but extend their efforts beyond the protocols set out in this document, intent on driving meaningful change for the primary care sector and the broader community.

“This MoU represents a meaningful step forward in our shared journey within the GP training environment. Together, we will continue to honour the strengths of our communities and lead with humility and respect - fostering two-way learning, grounded in shared values, with an impact that echoes across generations. This partnership strengthens our commitment to equipping every GP to provide culturally safe and respectful healthcare,” says GPSA Chair, Dr Srishti Dutta.

“JCTS looks forward to walking alongside the GPSA team to build a strong and enduring
relationship, grounded in mutual respect, shared cultural values, and a commitment to culturally
safe practice,” says
JCTS Chair Professor, Peter B. O'Mara.

The JCTS-GPSA MoU highlights the importance of working together to empower future generations of GPs to provide respectful, culturally responsive care - a goal that holds particular significance during NAIDOC Week, as we celebrate the resilience, achievements, and enduring contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
