Highlights from GPME 2025 – Wild Weather, Big Ideas, and Swamp Creatures!

Published on June 27, 2025

Dr Simon Morgan, GPSA Education Manager, shares his reflections on this year’s national gathering of medical educators.

In early June, I headed to a very wild and windy Adelaide/Glenelg for the annual GPME Conference – and what a packed program it was! With around 200 delegates and multiple streams of workshops running in parallel, this was the biggest GPME medical educator meeting I can recall.

The trip over from Newcastle was unexpectedly eventful when a fellow passenger collapsed mid-flight and required medical assistance. Dr Jess Wrigley and I stepped in to help until we landed safely in Adelaide, where the passenger was taken to hospital and is thankfully doing well.

Despite the excitement, we made it (just in time!) for Murray Ludington’s lively session, "What Gives Me the Shits in General Practice?", which Jess and I co-facilitated. The session explored the pain points faced by GPs, but with a refreshing, solution-focused approach rather than simply a whinge session. Murray is keen to develop a similar workshop tailored for GP supervisors – something well worth considering.

I also presented a short and light-hearted session on clinical reasoning through the lens of a cooking show, which was well received. I also ran a workshop on our work around external clinical teaching visits, which sparked great discussion and interest from the group.

Saturday’s plenary was delivered with Justin Coleman on "Growing the Curious GP", featuring a memorable (if slightly clunky!) role-play involving Schrödinger’s Cat.

As always, these conferences spark fresh ideas for education and research.

And the social highlight? Dressing as swamp creatures for the conference dinner with some old friends from my Newcastle RACGP days – photos attached for your amusement!
