New GPSA Guide helps general practice leaders address bullying, discrimination and harassment

Published on April 22, 2025

General Practice Supervision Australia (GPSA) is pleased to announce the launch of a new resource to support safer, more respectful workplaces for all participants in GP training.

The guide, Navigating bullying, discrimination and sexual harassment in the general practice workplace, was developed in collaboration with workplace culture expert Maureen Kyne, a recognised authority in upward bullying and complex team dynamics.

Addressing common concerns raised by GPSA members, the guide provides clear, practical advice on:

  • What constitutes bullying, including "upward bullying"
  • Roles and responsibilities in enforcing zero-tolerance policies
  • Managing performance expectations within a respectful framework
  • Complying with the Respect@Work legislation taking effect in 2025

GPSA CEO, Ms Carla Taylor, said the guide reflects a growing need for leadership in general practice to be supported in handling interpersonal and legal challenges confidently.

“Our members are telling us they feel uncertain about where the line is drawn between strong leadership and inappropriate conduct,” Ms Taylor said.

“This guide helps unravel a complex topic with clarity and practical tools contextualised for the GP training and supervisory environment.”

This new resource is part of GPSA’s ongoing commitment to empowering high-quality training placements through evidence-based educational resources.
