AI Revolutionising General Practice Training in Australia

Published on March 20, 2025

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making its mark on Australian general practice, offering the potential to reduce administrative burdens while improving healthcare delivery. However, in the context of its integration into general practice GP training, AI in its various forms must be approached with care to ensure patient safety, ethical use, and the effective development of core consultation skills in tomorrow’s GPs and RGs.

General Practice Supervisors Australia (GPSA) has released a position statement to guide GP supervisors and training practices in navigating AI’s role in general practice education. This document provides key recommendations to ensure best practice, patient safety, and the professional development of GP and RG trainees.

“Today’s medical students and junior doctors are already using AI in various ways, and it is crucial that GP supervisors understand its potential applications, risks, and regulatory requirements,” says GPSA Chair, Dr Srishti Dutta.

“By engaging with AI responsibly, supervisors can enhance the learning experience while maintaining high standards of patient care.”

Key Recommendations from GPSA:

  • Refer to Trusted Sources: Ensure AI use aligns with legal, ethical, and safety guidelines from AHPRA, RACGP, and ACRRM.

  • Education & Training: Utilize open-access educational resources and AI trials to build knowledge of AI tools in clinical practice.

  • Encourage Open Conversations: Discuss AI applications with trainees to ensure they use it safely and appropriately within the practice.

  • Supervision & Teaching: AI tools should enhance, not replace, clinical documentation skills. Supervisors must guide trainees on AI’s appropriate use.

  • Remain Curious: AI is an evolving field, and both supervisors and trainees should critically evaluate its role in general practice.

GPSA encourages GP supervisors and training practices to stay informed and proactive in adapting to AI advancements. By doing so, they can prepare the next generation of GPs to use AI responsibly while maintaining excellence in patient care.
