GPSA welcomes commencement of more AGPT training places
GPSA welcomes the commencement of additional GP training places in the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program, recognising this as a positive step toward strengthening the GP workforce..
Expanding training places is an important part of meeting future workforce needs and supporting access to general practice care for communities across Australia, including those in urban, regional, rural and remote settings.
GPSA Chair, Dr Candice Baker, said GP supervisors and training practices play a central role in delivering high-quality GP training.
“GP supervisors and their practices are integral to the success of the training system, and our members are committed to supporting registrars at every stage of their training,” Dr Baker said. “With the right planning and collaboration, supervisors are well placed to help deliver additional training places across diverse practice settings.”
GPSA represents a national network of supervisors and training practices that provide the clinical experience, mentorship and continuity essential to GP training. This network is positioned to support growth in training numbers while maintaining the quality of supervision and learning environments.
Dr Baker noted that continued collaboration with Government, the Colleges and training stakeholders will be important to ensure training expansion is implemented smoothly and sustainably.
“A coordinated approach that considers supervision capacity, placement planning and practice support will help ensure additional training places translate into long-term workforce benefits,” she said.
GPSA looks forward to working with partners across the sector to support sustainable GP training and supervision and to help build a strong, future-ready general practice workforce.
