GPSA CEO, Carla Taylor, at the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE) Conference in Adelaide with Dr Susan Hawken and Prof Stephen Tobin from what's planned to be Australia's first mostly-online University College with extensive medical education in general practice, NewMed.

What is this opportunity?

There's soon to be a new kid on the block in the medical school space, and this one's quite different...

New Medical Education P/L is a private company, its raison d’être being to establish an outstanding new medical school for Australia.

It is NOT yet a medical school - however, its TEQSA submission to become a University College is currently being loaded on the higher education authority’s portal.

NewMed is getting underway with its AMC Stage 1 submission, that being the next stage towards accreditation. Subject to regulatory approval, NewMed hopes to commence with its first cohort in 2026.

Intentionally, this is a GP-first medical program, with more clinical hours in primary care than hospitals.

NewMed is recruiting GP supervisors and practices for 95 students, half day week across Year 1 (2026), continuing as one day/week across Year 2 (2027), and three days/week across Year 3 (2028).

NewMed will recognise involved GPs - there will be specific supports and remuneration. There will be opportunity to contribute to curriculum, assessment and small group teaching as well.

The distributed model across the Eastern States and SA will allow medical students to stay at home in rural, regional and outer urban locations, with NewMed committed to using best endeavours to match student and practice locations.

Please see newmedschool.com.au for more information about this innovative and exciting new medical program. EOIs from prospective supervisors and practcies are now open on the NewMed website, or can be emailed directly to [email protected].
