Men in Mind for Primary Care

Help men stay connected to care with Movember’s free primary care CPD

More than 37,000 Australian men die prematurely each year, many from avoidable causes (AIHW, 2023). Men account for 75 per cent of suicide deaths, and in the year before their death, 87 per cent of men who died by suicide had accessed a health service.

Primary care has a critical role to play in prevention, early intervention and continuity of care, but access alone is not enough.

Movember research shows 67 per cent of Australian men have wanted to leave a healthcare practitioner because they did not feel a connection, 43 per cent have actually left one, and one in seven stopped going to that kind of care altogether, rather than finding someone else.

That is the connection gap Men in Mind for Primary Care helps close.

Men in Mind for Primary Care is Movember’s free, evidence-informed online CPD training program for GPs, primary care nurses and pharmacists.

Developed by the Movember Institute, the program provides practical, profession-specific tools to help practitioners strengthen everyday interactions with men, build trust, support follow-through and help men stay connected to care.

The training is designed to build on the skills practitioners already use every day, while covering practical approaches to engaging men that are not always taught in formal training. Movember survey data shows only 14 per cent of healthcare professionals reported receiving training in how to engage men in healthcare, underscoring the need for practical, real-world tools.

Each course is self-paced, tailored to the profession completing it, accounts for 2.5 CPD hours and is accredited or endorsed by practitioners’ peak bodies.

The courses introduce the MALE framework and include testimony from men with lived experience and practitioners, helping bring the training into real-world primary care contexts.
