Supporting GP Registrars and Practices During Training

Published on November 21, 2025

As part of ongoing efforts to support high-quality training environments, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has provided the following information for GP supervisors and practices regarding new parental leave incentives and related workplace requirements.

From Semester 1, 2026, the GP training parental leave incentive will be introduced. Practices must continue to meet all legislative obligations under the Fair Work Act 2009 and Sex Discrimination Act 1984, and uphold best practice standards to maintain a fair, inclusive and compliant workplace. Registrars are entitled to equitable treatment during recruitment and employment, regardless of future family plans or personal circumstances.

 Expectations for Practices:

  • Recruitment and employment decisions must be based on merit, not personal or family circumstances.
  • All registrars must have equal access to GP Training Incentive Payments and other entitlements.
  • Workplace practices must be free from discrimination, including those related to family or caring responsibilities.

The Department appreciates the ongoing commitment of GP practices to provide supportive and respectful environments for GP registrars.

GP Training Incentives Policy:

The GP Training Incentive Payments Policy has been approved by the Minister and has been published on the DOHDA GP Training Incentive Payments webpage.
